The Ball

In mid April 2010 Bernie was diagnosed with breast cancer, the third Nolan sister to have the disease. She made an appointment to see her GP & was referred to a breast screening clinic. She said: 'They did a mammogram, an ultrasound & took biopsies. Suddenly I thought "this is quite serious". 'They said to me that I should come back to the clinic for the results as opposed to having them over the phone & I immediately thought "it's not good then".' A week later doctors gave her the news that she & her husband Steve were dreading. Bernie said: 'I was so shocked. I thought I was invincible. I went to the car with my husband & I completely lost it.'

Bernie went public vowing to fight the disease. She became a flag bearer for cancer victims & used her illness in a positive way to spread the word that cancer could & would be beaten. Bernie gave tips about getting regular check ups & not to delay in seeking advice if you suspect that something is not right. Bernie's amazing attitude helped others but she too was inspired by numerous well wishers, many of whom had already beaten the disease themselves. In October 2012 Bernie announced that her cancer was back & was incurable but she vowed to fight on & not give in to the disease with her typical fiesty attitude to the illness. Below are a series of news articles & links that will hopefully get across the message that Bernie consistently preached - Get checked out straight away, don't delay.

The Bernie Nolan Breakthrough Tribute Fund

Breakthrough Breast Cancer was honoured to have such a wonderful ambassador in Bernie Nolan. She was an inspiration in her tireless fight against breast cancer and it is no exaggeration to say that her commitment to this cause, and the exposure she gave it, has helped to save lives. The Bernie Nolan Tribute Fund will not only celebrate Bernie’s wonderful spirit, it will commemorate her life and legacy, as well as allowing her fans and loved ones to continue her fight against this disease for years to come.
Steve Doneathy, Bernie’s husband, says: “It is incredibly hard for myself and Erin these days, however if Bernie’s wonderful spirit can be used to help in the future, that would bring some comfort to us. Bernie believed that Breakthrough Breast Cancer’s research was crucial; and it’s reassuring to think she is still in people’s thoughts, and making a difference to people’s experience with this terrible disease."
