In mid April 2010 Bernie was diagnosed with breast
cancer, the third Nolan sister to have the disease. She made an
appointment to see her GP & was referred to a breast screening clinic.
She said: 'They did a mammogram, an ultrasound & took biopsies.
Suddenly I thought "this is quite serious". 'They said to me that I
should come back to the clinic for the results as opposed to having them
over the phone & I immediately thought "it's not good then".' A week
later doctors gave her the news that she & her husband Steve were
dreading. Bernie said: 'I was so shocked. I thought I was invincible. I
went to the car with my husband & I completely lost it.'
Bernie went public vowing to fight the disease. She became a flag bearer for cancer victims & used her illness in a positive way to spread the word that cancer could & would be beaten. Bernie gave tips about getting regular check ups & not to delay in seeking advice if you suspect that something is not right. Bernie's amazing attitude helped others but she too was inspired by numerous well wishers, many of whom had already beaten the disease themselves. link to Breast Cancer Care. Org
