Bernie has been a regular feature on British television for over 20 years. Bernie's solo TV appearances began long before she left The Nolans with guest spots on shows like 'Cheggars Plays Pop' & 'On the Waterfront'. However Bernie's big break as an television actress came in the year 2000 when she joined the cast of the long running (first aired in 1982) soap Brookside. The Murrays, a new family, were introduced.They became an important part of Brookside & featured singer Bernie Nolan as Diane Murray in her first acting role & Neil Caple as Marty Murray. The Murrays succeeded in sparking new viewer interest in Brookside & the family became central various to plots, such as Diane's lengthy IVF treatment, daughter Adele's under-age pregnancy & abortion  & young Anthony's bullying storyline, where he accidentally killed Imelda Clough. In 2003 Bernie  made her debut in The Bill as Sgt Sheelagh Murphy. Her time in Sun Hill was eventful, involving an affair with PC Des Taviner, which ended after his confession of murder, and the cot death of their baby, Niamh. Other problems that occured during her tenure at the station included her son, Connor, announcing his sexuality, which offended her religious beliefs and clashes with colleagues over potential racism.
